Reporting guidance should be followed for the conduct of your scoping review, including the protocol. Our group has established best-practice guidance and reporting items for the development of a scoping review protocol. Currently, those that undertake scoping reviews are asked to use the PRISMA extension for Scoping Reviews reporting guidance (Tricco et al. 2018a). PRISMA-ScR is a tool to assist in the reporting of scoping reviews, but does not currently address the reporting of knowledge about user engagement in scoping reviews. In 2021, the PRISMA statement was updated from its 2009 version (Page et al. 2021). The changes, while necessary to ensure increased transparency and rigour in reporting for systematic reviews, have had some implications for scoping reviews. The PRISMA-ScR extension is currently being updated, and a new version is due for release in 2026.
