In 2020, JBI scoping review methodology underwent substantial changes, including a refinement of the nomenclature from ‘systematic scoping reviews’ to simply ‘scoping reviews’. This was due to our general acknowledgment that all types of evidence synthesis should be ‘systematic’. In addition, the recently developed Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for scoping reviews (PRISMA-ScR) was introduced, which substantially drew upon the original JBI scoping review methodology and other existing guidance (Tricco et al. 2018a). Recently, JBI has also developed more specific guidance for the development and reporting of protocols for scoping reviews – a distinct characteristic of JBI scoping reviews that enhances their rigor and reproducibility in the same way that protocols do for well-conducted systematic reviews (Peters et al. 2022). This current update continues to build on the over ten years of methodological guidance that has been produced by the JBI Scoping Review Methodology group since 2013 (Peters et al. 2015). Since the last update in 2020 (Peters et al. 2021), the JBI Scoping Review Methodology group has established the  JBI Scoping Review Network  with more than 2000 global members and continues to grow. The network has created an avenue for more direct connections with researchers who are undertaking scoping reviews. As a result of creating this opportunity for connection, more questions have been raised by its members, and in response, we have been rapidly expanding our guidance to address these queries and to support and improve understanding for those undertaking scoping reviews. Much of this guidance now appears in several publications that have been produced by the authors of this chapter. This update will therefore integrate this additional guidance (some of which has been published) and will include the following: The newly articulated definition of scoping reviews   (Munn et al. 2022) Guidance on how to develop scoping review protocols  (Peters et al. 2022) Guidance for engaging knowledge users in scoping reviews  (Pollock et al. 2022) Guidance on how to consider equity, diversity and inclusion issues in the conduct of scoping reviews Further guidance on the extraction, analysis and presentation of scoping reviews  (Pollock et al. 2023) Guidance on how PRISMA-ScR aligns with PRISMA 2020 The role of scoping reviews in reducing research waste   (Khalil et al. 2022b) Guidance for how to conduct scoping reviews in specific disciplines, such as nursing, midwifery   and pharmacy  (Khalil et al. 2022a, Pollock et al. 2021) The difference between scoping reviews, mapping reviews, evidence and gap maps and overviews of reviews  (Campbell et al. 2023) The role of scoping reviews in guideline development   (Pollock et al. 2024b) The role of scoping reviews in research prioritisation   (Khalil et al. 2025) How we can use automation tools in scoping reviews  (Khalil et al. 2024) Issues, challenges and recommendations for large scoping reviews  (Alexander et al. 2024) Rapid scoping reviews  (Campbell et al. 2025). Due to the extensive work carried out since 2020, the decision was made by the JBI Scientific Committee that this chapter required updating and consolidation.
